THE SOUL OF RIGA
The Alexander Gate
History and FactsThe Alexander Gate, located at the entrance of Viesturdārzs Park, was built in 1817 to commemorate Tsar Alexander I and Russia’s victory over Napoleon.
Designed in the neoclassical style, the arch once stood near Esplanāde but was later moved to its current location in 1936.
Today, it marks the peaceful threshold to Riga’s oldest public park — a silent witness to two centuries of the city’s history.

Interesting FactThe gate originally served as part of Riga’s defensive structure, but now it stands as a monument of calm, often framing the path of morning joggers and evening walkers alike.

Author’s NoteWhat was once built to honor victory now welcomes peace.
