THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
The Alexander Gate
History and Facts
The Alexander Gate (Alexander Triumphal Arch), standing at the entrance of Viesturdārzs Park, was built between 1815 and 1817 to honor Tsar Alexander I and the Russian Empire’s victory over Napoleon’s army in 1812. Designed in a strict neoclassical style and modeled after Roman triumphal arches, it originally stood at the end of Alexander Street (today Brīvības iela) near the city’s then border.
In 1904 the arch was dismantled and moved toward the Šmerlis area due to new railway works, and in 1936 it was relocated to its current place in Viesturdārzs. Today it marks a peaceful threshold to Riga’s oldest public park — a quiet witness to two centuries of the city’s history.

Interesting Fact
This is Latvia’s only triumphal arch. Once a ceremonial city gate welcoming the emperor, it now frames everyday life — morning joggers, families, and evening walkers.

Author’s Note
What was once built to honor victory now welcomes peace.
