THE SOUL OF RIGA
Bastejkalns Canal
Historical Facts:
The Bastejkalns Canal originated from Riga’s 17th-century defensive moat, surrounding the city’s fortress walls.
In the 19th century, it was transformed into a decorative waterway as part of Riga’s urban garden plan designed by Georg Kuphaldt.

Interesting Fact:
The canal stretches about 3 km, connecting the Freedom Monument, Opera House, and Kronvalda Park — a central artery of Riga’s green heart.

Author’s Note:
Where fortifications once stood, peace now flows.
