THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Kronvalda Park Canal
History and Facts
This stretch of Riga’s City Canal winds through Kronvalda Park as part of the green belt around the historic centre. The canal follows the line of Riga’s former defensive moat, which surrounded the fortress ramparts until they were dismantled in the mid-19th century. Later, landscape architect Georg Kuphaldt reshaped the area into a decorative waterway within the city’s boulevard-park system.

Interesting Fact
The City Canal is about 3.2 km long and links several of Riga’s key parks and landmarks — from Bastejkalns and the Freedom Monument area past the Opera to Kronvalda Park — forming a central artery of Riga’s “green heart.”
