THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Tram at the Theatre
History and Facts
The Latvian National Theatre, opened in 1902 by architect August Reinberg, is one of Riga’s key cultural landmarks. On 18 November 1918, Latvia’s independence was proclaimed from this very building.
Today, the theatre stands beside a historic tram corridor and the stop “Nacionālais teātris,” where lines including No. 5 pass — a living reminder of how Riga’s history and daily motion share the same street.

Interesting Fact
The tram routes here belong to the city’s oldest electric network, running since 1901. For more than a century, trams have carried generations past the same façade where Latvia’s modern story began.
