THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Latvian National Theatre
History and Facts
Opened in 1902 and designed by architect August Reinberg, the Latvian National Theatre is a landmark of Riga’s early-20th-century eclectic historicism with neo-Baroque accents. Built as Riga’s Second City (Russian) Theatre, it later became a cradle of Latvian stage culture.
On 18 November 1918, the Provisional Government proclaimed the independence of Latvia from this very building — making it one of the most historic addresses in the country.

Interesting Fact
During World War II and the Soviet era the theatre worked under different names, most notably Riga Drama Theatre. Its original national title was restored in 1988, as Latvia moved toward reclaiming its independence.

Author’s Note
Within these walls, Latvia found its voice — and still speaks through art.
