THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Freedom Monument
History and Facts
Erected in 1935, the Freedom Monument is Latvia’s most important symbol of statehood and independence. The statue of Liberty — affectionately called Milda — lifts three stars that represent Latvia’s historical regions.

Interesting Fact
During the Soviet period the monument was constantly monitored, yet it was never demolished. It remained a quiet place of remembrance and hope, and later became a focal point for the independence movement.

Author’s Note
Under a clear sky, the monument’s calm, upright posture feels timeless — strength expressed through simplicity.
