THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
The Bell of Saint Peter
History and Facts
The spire of St. Peter’s Church is one of Riga’s defining silhouettes. A Gothic bell tower has stood here since the late 15th century, but over time it has repeatedly changed the skyline — the tower collapsed in 1666, was rebuilt, burned after a lightning strike in 1721, and was destroyed during World War II in 1941. The present tower, with a metal frame, was restored in the 1970s, continuing the church’s role as a landmark of the Old Town.

Interesting Fact
Today the tower’s bells and clock chimes play the folk melody “Rīga dimd” several times a day, and visitors can reach the viewing gallery at about 72 m above the city.

Author’s Note
Under the full moon, time pauses — the bell may be far above, but the city still listens.
