Bastejkalns Park – The Green Heart of Riga
History and Facts
Bastejkalns Park was established in the 19th century on the site of Riga’s former defensive ramparts. After the moat was filled and the city canal constructed, the area was turned into a public promenade. The park’s hills and winding paths preserve the shape of the old bastion, making it a central landmark of Riga’s urban history and leisure.

Interesting Fact
One of its bridges is a popular spot for newlyweds to attach locks as a symbol of eternal love. The park also contains monuments to cultural figures such as Krišjānis Barons.

Author’s Note
I chose Bastejkalns Park because, for me, it symbolizes peace and nature in the very heart of the city. Infrared photography highlights the trees’ lightness and the contrast with Riga’s urban surroundings.
