THE SOUL OF RIGA
Freedom Monument – Symbol of Latvia’s Independence
History and Facts
The Freedom Monument was unveiled on 18 November 1935 and built from public donations in honor of those who fell during Latvia’s War of Independence. The monument, about 42.7 meters tall, was created by sculptor Kārlis Zāle and architect Ernests Štālbergs. Made of granite, travertine, reinforced concrete, and copper, it is crowned by the figure of Liberty — affectionately called “Milda” — holding three stars that symbolize Latvia’s historical regions united as one nation.

Interesting Fact
During the Soviet occupation the monument was not demolished, but public gatherings nearby were forbidden or tightly controlled. Still, people quietly laid flowers here, turning it into a place of peaceful resistance and a living reminder of Latvia’s independence.

Author’s Note
I chose this monument because it represents, for me, the very soul of Latvia. In this image, I wanted to capture “Milda” framed between the silhouettes of trees, opening like symbolic gates of freedom.
