THE SOUL OF RIGA
Crossing the Frozen Daugava
History & Facts
In harsh winters, the Daugava in Riga can freeze so solidly that people are able to cross it like a natural bridge. Though always risky, this phenomenon has been part of Riga’s winter landscape for centuries.

Interesting Fact
In earlier times, pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages, and merchants with goods traveled across the frozen river. Today, stepping onto the ice is dangerous and is often officially prohibited in Riga.
