THE SOUL OF RIGA
Crossing the Frozen Daugava
History & Facts
During cold winters, the Daugava River sometimes freezes so solidly that people can cross it as if on a natural bridge. Although risky, this phenomenon has been part of Riga’s winter landscape for centuries.

Interesting Fact
In earlier times, not only pedestrians but also horse-drawn carriages and merchants with goods traveled across the frozen river.
