THE SOUL OF RIGA
At the Crossroads of Light and Shadow — St. Gertrude’s Church
History and Facts
Old St. Gertrude’s Church in Riga was built in 1864–1869 and consecrated in 1869, designed by architect Johann Daniel Felsko. It is a refined example of 19th-century Eclecticism with Neo-Gothic accents, and its red-brick vertical silhouette stands out in the cityscape.

Interesting Fact
The church is called “Old” because a New St. Gertrude’s Church was built nearby in the early 20th century. Its tower, about 63 meters high, has long served as a landmark along Brīvības Street.

Author’s Note
In this frame, I wanted to show how the historic spire merges with reflections of modern glass. The long exposure adds a sense of time flowing through the street.
