THE SOUL OF RIGA
Riga Canal Fountain at Bastejkalns Park
History and Facts
The Riga City Canal was once part of the defensive moat surrounding the Old Town. In the 19th century, after the ramparts were removed, it was reshaped into a scenic canal and park promenade. The fountain has since become one of Bastejkalns’ signature landmarks, especially during summer.

Interesting Fact
The canal stretches for about 3.2 km, linking the Daugava River with Riga’s central parks and forming a green, waterside ring around Old Riga. Its banks remain a favorite place for walks and quiet relaxation.

Author’s Note
The long exposure turned the fountain into a column of light, adding a magical, almost surreal feeling to the calm park atmosphere.
