THE SOUL OF RIGA
Kronvalds Park – Silence by the Canal
History and Facts
Kronvalds Park is one of Riga’s central canal-side parks, created after the city’s fortification ramparts were dismantled and the canal zone was landscaped in the 1860s. The area was first developed in 1863 as Strēlnieku dārzs (the Riflemen’s Garden) by the Riga German Riflemen Society, and it was significantly expanded and redesigned in 1883 under architect Georgs Kūfaldts. In the 1930s the park was renamed in honor of the Latvian public figure Atis Kronvalds. Today it covers about 11.9 hectares and remains a green landmark in the heart of Riga.

Interesting Fact
The park is known for its historic linden alleys and rich collection of rare and introduced tree species, making it a true botanical treasure along the City Canal.

Author’s Note
I chose this place because it feels like the heart of Riga — a space where nature and architecture breathe together. Infrared photography adds a dreamlike stillness to the canal, as if time itself has paused.
