THE SOUL OF RIGA
Latvian National Opera and Ballet – Temple of Art
History and Facts
The Latvian National Opera building was constructed in 1863, designed by architect Ludwig Bohnstedt as the German Theatre. After several reconstructions, it became the home of the Latvian National Opera and Ballet. Today it stages both classical and contemporary operas and ballets and stands as one of the leading cultural institutions in the Baltic region.

Interesting Fact
On the Opera Garden side stands the sculpture The White Wagtail, which during the Soviet era was a popular meeting spot for Riga’s residents.

Author’s Note
I chose the National Opera because it represents, for me, the grandeur of Latvian culture and art. Infrared photography highlights the contrast between the building’s classical monumentality and the softness of evening light.
