THE SOUL OF RIGA
Latvian Academy of Sciences – Riga’s “Stalin Cake”
History and Facts
The Latvian Academy of Sciences high-rise was built between 1951 and 1961 in Stalin-era Socialist Classicism (often called “Stalinist Gothic”), inspired by Soviet skyscrapers such as Moscow’s “Seven Sisters.” About 108 meters tall, it was the tallest building in Latvia for many decades. It was originally planned as the House of Collective Farm Workers (Collective Farmers’ House) and was later given to the Academy of Sciences.

Interesting Fact
An observation deck on the 17th floor is open to visitors and offers a panoramic view over Riga’s center and Old Town.

Author’s Note
I chose this building because it highlights Riga’s historical contrasts — between medieval church spires and Soviet-era monumentalism. In this photograph, I wanted to capture its reflection in the water, symbolizing two Rigas — the real and the symbolic.
