THE SOUL OF RIGA
Opera by the Canal — Latvian National Opera
History & Facts
The Latvian National Opera building opened in 1863, designed by architect Ludwig Bohnstedt as the Riga City (German) Theatre. A major fire in 1882 devastated the interior, and the house was restored and reopened in 1887. Today it is the home stage of Latvia’s leading opera and ballet company.

Interesting Fact
Often called Riga’s “White House,” the opera hosts major national premieres and tours internationally, welcoming world-class artists to the canal-side stage.

Author’s Note
Seen from the canal, the opera feels like an open-air theatre. A long exposure smooths the water and deepens the calm of the city center.
