THE SOUL OF RIGA
Hidden Courtyard Labyrinth — Riga
History & Facts
Riga’s city center took shape rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when large rental houses with enclosed inner courtyards were built. These courtyards served as the city’s “backstage” — practical spaces for access, light, household functions, and everyday life behind the façades.

Interesting Fact
Many courtyards are still used for parking today, but more and more are being revived as creative and leisure spaces — with cafés, courtyard events, and small community oases.

Author’s Note
The aerial view reveals Riga differently — as a hidden labyrinth of inner yards tucked behind its historic streets.
