THE SOUL OF RIGA
Riga Panorama across the Daugava — Academy of Sciences
History and Facts
Riga Central Market pavilions were built in the late 1920s and opened in 1930, using metal frameworks from German Zeppelin hangars from World War I. Rising behind them is the Latvian Academy of Sciences tower — a landmark of Soviet “Stalinist Gothic” (Socialist Classicism), constructed between 1951 and 1961 and completed in 1961.

Interesting Fact
The tower is often nicknamed the “younger sister of Moscow’s Seven Sisters,” a typical monument of Soviet-era high-rise architecture in the Baltics.

Author’s Note
A long exposure smooths the Daugava into a mirror, reflecting the city’s verticals. This view unites historic market halls with Soviet monumental modernism.
