THE SOUL OF RIGA
Sun Strings — Vanšu Bridge, Riga
History & Facts
The Vanšu Bridge spans the Daugava River and opened in 1981. It is a single-pylon cable-stayed bridge, supported by a 109-meter pylon. Built during the Soviet era (when it was known as the Gorky Bridge), it connects the city center and Old Riga with Ķīpsala and Pārdaugava, and remains one of Riga’s most recognizable modern landmarks.

Interesting Fact
At the time of its opening, Vanšu Bridge ranked among the longest cable-stayed bridges in the USSR. Today it is one of Riga’s favorite subjects for architecture and cityscape photography, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Author’s Note
Pointed at the sun, the cables become pure rhythm and geometry; in infrared, the metal and sky turn into high-contrast forms.
