THE SOUL OF RIGA
Tracks to the Castle of Light – The Road to Knowledge
History and Facts
The National Library of Latvia, popularly known as the Castle of Light, is one of the country’s most modern cultural landmarks. Opened in 2014 and designed by architect Gunārs Birkerts, the building’s silhouette symbolizes both the Glass/Castle of Light mountain from Latvian folklore—where wisdom is kept—and the nation’s journey toward freedom and enlightenment.

Interesting Fact
The idea of the new library was born in the late 1980s and took more than two decades to realize; its opening became a national celebration that united Latvians at home and abroad.

Author’s Note
I chose this perspective because the railway tracks symbolize a journey—both physical and spiritual. They lead directly to the Castle of Light, emphasizing the importance of knowledge and culture. Infrared photography adds a dramatic and fateful atmosphere to this road.
