THE SOUL OF RIGA
Bench in the Park – Conversations in Silence
History and Facts
Riga’s historic parks along the City Canal — Bastejkalns Park, Kronvalds Park, and Vērmanes Garden — formed the city’s green promenade belt in the 19th century. Bastejkalns and Kronvalds Park were landscaped after Riga’s fortification ramparts were dismantled and the canal was created, while Vērmanes Garden was founded earlier in 1814 and later became part of this canal-side park system. These parks quickly became favorite places for residents to relax and stroll.

Interesting Fact
The canal parks were designed as landscape gardens with winding paths, small bridges, sculptures, and benches — spaces still loved for quiet conversations and reflection in the heart of the city.

Author’s Note
I chose this scene because it shows Riga’s intimate side — not only its monuments but also everyday life. Two people sitting on a bench among fallen leaves symbolize, for me, the quiet heartbeat of the city.
