THE SOUL OF RIGA
St. James’s Catholic Cathedral of Riga – The Catholic Heart of Riga
History and Facts
St. James’s Cathedral is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Riga. Built in the 13th century and consecrated in 1225, it has changed denominations several times over the centuries: after the Reformation it became Lutheran, but in 1923 it was returned to the Catholic Church and became the seat of the Archbishop of Riga. The building has preserved its Brick Gothic character, with narrow windows, pointed forms, and a strong vertical silhouette; its spire rises to about 91.6 meters.

Interesting Fact
The cathedral’s tower is one of the best-preserved medieval church towers in Riga. Its pyramidal spire is topped with roosters rather than crosses, making it a unique and recognizable element in the city skyline. The cathedral has also welcomed papal visits, including Pope John Paul II in 1993 and Pope Francis in 2018.

Author’s Note
I chose this location because it represents a crossroads of faith and history in Riga. Through infrared photography, I wanted to emphasize the dramatic verticality of the spire and the play of light, enhancing the cathedral’s quiet majesty.
