THE SOUL OF RIGA
St. James’s Cathedral – The Catholic Heart of Riga
History and Facts
St. James’s Cathedral was built in 1225 as a Catholic church. During the Reformation it was taken over by Lutherans, but in 1923 it was restored to the Catholic Church and became the seat of the Archbishop of Riga. The building has preserved its Gothic character through the centuries, with narrow windows, pointed towers, and decorative details.

Interesting Fact
The cathedral’s bell is one of the oldest in Riga, dating back to the 14th century. Legend says its sound carried across the Daugava River, guiding travelers on their journeys.

Author’s Note
I chose this location because it represents a crossroads of faith and history in Riga. Infrared photography emphasized the dramatic verticality of the spire and the play of light, enhancing the cathedral’s majesty.
