THE SOUL OF RIGA
Torņakalns Station – At the Crossroads of History and Journeys
History and Facts
Torņakalns Station opened in 1868 as the northern terminus of the Riga–Jelgava railway line. The site is deeply tied to Latvia’s tragic history: from here, thousands of Latvians were deported to Siberia on 14 June 1941 and 25 March 1949. Today, the station continues to serve as an active passenger hub.

Interesting Fact
Next to the station stands the Memorial to Victims of Communist Terror — a deportation railway wagon and monument remind visitors of these painful chapters in Latvian history.

Author’s Note
I chose this location because Torņakalns Station represents not only the beginning or end of a journey but also the living memory of history. Infrared photography adds a tone of melancholy and the flow of time to the scene.
