THE SOUL OF RIGA
Victory Park – Alley of Silence and History
History and Facts
Victory Park was created in 1909 in Pārdaugava as Peter’s (Petrovsky) Park and officially opened in 1910. In 1923 it was renamed Victory Park to honor Latvia’s 1919 victory over Bermondt’s forces during the War of Independence. Covering about 36.7 hectares, it remains one of Riga’s largest parks and a place that has witnessed many historical shifts over the last century.

Interesting Fact
The park has hosted public ceremonies and sporting events for decades. Today it is a favorite spot for cycling and jogging, and in spring it transforms as thousands of flowers bloom. After the Soviet-era monument was dismantled in 2022, the park gained a renewed, calmer public landscape.

Author’s Note
I chose this location because the rows of trees symbolize for me the passage of time and continuity. Infrared photography makes them appear like guardians of light, watching over the city.
