THE SOUL OF RIGA
Cables to the Sky — Vanšu Bridge
History and Facts
The Vanšu Bridge across the Daugava opened in 1981. Its 109 m pylon and steel cables represented state-of-the-art engineering of the time, linking the city center with Pārdaugava.

Interesting Fact
Built in the Soviet era (when it was known as the Gorky Bridge), it ranked among the most advanced cable-stayed bridges of its day. The single-plane arrangement of cables gives Riga’s skyline its distinct, recognizable profile.

Author’s Note
The cables rising into the sky create a dramatic perspective. In infrared, the structure becomes a graphic composition between earth and sky.
