THE SOUL OF RIGA
Cables to the Sky — Vanšu Bridge
History & Facts
The Vanšu Bridge across the Daugava opened in 1981. Its 109 m pylon and steel cables represented state-of-the-art engineering of the time, linking the city center with Pārdaugava.

Interesting
The bridge was built using technologies similar to other major Soviet infrastructure projects, yet it has become a distinctive icon of Riga.

Author’s Note
The cables rising into the sky create a dramatic perspective. In infrared, the structure becomes a graphic composition between earth and sky.
