THE SOUL OF RIGA
Under the Vanšu Bridge, Daugava Embankment
History and Facts
The Vanšu Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge across the Daugava River, opened in 1981. Built in the Soviet era, it was initially known as the Gorky Bridge; today it links Krišjāna Valdemāra Street to Kalnciema Street across Ķīpsala. Key figures: total length ~625 m (main span 312 m), roadway width ~28 m, pylon height ~109 m.

Interesting Fact
The Latvian word vanšu refers to the cables (shrouds) supporting the deck. Views from and beneath the bridge open sweeping panoramas towards Old Riga, the National Library and Ķīpsala—making this spot popular with runners and photographers.

Author’s Note
I chose a vantage point beneath the bridge to emphasize its triangular symmetry and the glassy surface of the Daugava created by long exposure. Infrared tonality heightens the contrast between engineering and river calm.
