THE SOUL OF RIGA
Winter Light over the Railway Bridge
History and Facts
The Riga Railway Bridge across the Daugava was built in 1909–1914 and opened in 1914 as the city’s main rail crossing. Damaged in both World Wars, it was rebuilt several times, with the present structure completed in 1955. It remains Riga’s only railway bridge over the Daugava.

Interesting Fact
The bridge carries both passenger and freight trains. At night it is illuminated in blue and white — the colors of Riga’s flag — and on special occasions the lighting takes on festive accents that shimmer across the river.

Author’s Note
Winter creates a striking contrast here. Through bare branches and steel arches, the bridge feels like a gateway of light over the frozen Daugava.
