THE SOUL OF RIGA
Akmens Bridge & National Library at Golden Hour
History and Facts
Akmens Bridge is one of Riga’s central crossings over the Daugava. On the opposite bank stands the National Library of Latvia — the “Castle of Light” — a contemporary landmark designed by Gunnar Birkerts and opened in 2014.

Interesting Fact
When the sun is low, the bridge’s lamps and railings catch a warm glow while the Library’s angular silhouette reflects the light — a dialogue between historic infrastructure and modern culture.

Author’s Note
I was drawn to the rhythm of pylons, lamps and stairs leading the eye toward the Library. The warm side-light revealed structure and texture, turning transit into architecture.
