THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Akmens Bridge & National Library at Golden Hour
History and Facts
Akmens Bridge is one of Riga’s central crossings over the Daugava, opened in 1957 and linking the Old Town with Pārdaugava. On the opposite bank stands the National Library of Latvia — the “Castle of Light” — a contemporary landmark designed by Latvian-American architect Gunārs Birkerts and opened in 2014.

Interesting Fact
When the sun is low, the bridge’s lamps and railings catch a warm glow while the Library’s angular silhouette reflects the light — a quiet dialogue between mid-20th-century infrastructure and modern Latvian culture.

Author’s Note
I was drawn to the rhythm of pylons, lamps, and stairs leading the eye toward the Library. The warm side-light revealed structure and texture, turning transit into architecture.
