THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Cat House — The Cats of Defiance
History and Facts
The Cat House is one of Riga’s most loved architectural landmarks, built in 1909 by architect Friedrich Scheffel. The building blends a medieval-inspired silhouette with Art Nouveau details, especially in its ornate entrance portal. Its name comes from two copper cat sculptures perched on the roof turrets.

Interesting Fact
According to a famous Riga legend, the wealthy merchant who commissioned the house was denied membership in the Great Guild. In protest, he placed the cats with their raised tails pointing toward the guild building. Later, after a reconciliation (or a court decision), the cats were turned to face the guild — and became a playful symbol of Riga’s wit.

Author’s Note
I framed one of the cats through narrow streets and overhead lines to show how Riga’s stories live inside its architecture — serious and whimsical at the same time.
