THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
House of the Blackheads Statue & Town Hall Square
History and Facts
The House of the Blackheads was originally built in 1334 for Riga’s merchant community and later became the home of the Brotherhood of Blackheads — a guild of young, unmarried merchants. The building was destroyed during World War II, and the façade you see today is a faithful reconstruction completed in the late 1990s. Its richly ornamented front remains one of the brightest jewels of Old Riga.

Interesting Fact
The figure of St. George slaying the dragon, seen in this square, is a traditional symbol of courage and protection — a fitting emblem for a place that for centuries was Riga’s marketplace and civic heart.

Author’s Note
I wanted the evening light and decorative reliefs to speak of trade, community, and resilience — layers of stories held by this square.
