THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Golden Rooster of Riga
History and Facts
The gilded roosters atop Riga’s church spires are more than decoration — they serve as weather vanes and carry strong spiritual symbolism. This tradition has crowned Old Riga’s churches since at least the 15th century. The most famous rooster stands on St. Peter’s Church, long guiding the winds above the city.

Interesting Fact
Each rooster is hollow, crafted from copper and gilded. St. Peter’s Church has had several roosters over the centuries; the current one was installed in 1970 and later regilded. Older roosters are preserved as historical treasures — one of St. Peter’s original roosters is kept inside the church as an exhibit.

Author’s Note
Photographed against a soft morning sky, the rooster embodies vigilance, faith, and light — a golden guardian above Riga’s rooftops.
