THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Castle of Light
History and Facts
The National Library of Latvia, widely known as the “Castle of Light,” was designed by Latvian-American architect Gunārs Birkerts and opened in 2014 on the banks of the Daugava. Its sharp, rising silhouette is inspired by Latvian folklore — the legends of the Castle of Light and the Glass Mountain, symbolizing wisdom ascending from darkness.

Interesting Fact
The building’s glass façade mirrors the river and Riga’s skyline, visually linking knowledge with the city and nature around it.
