THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
Powder Tower
History and Facts
The Powder Tower is one of the last surviving towers of Riga’s medieval city wall. It was first built in the early 14th century as the Sand Tower, and after being destroyed in 1621, it was rebuilt in its present form in 1650. From the 17th century it became known as the Powder Tower because gunpowder was stored here. Today it forms part of the Latvian War Museum.

Interesting Fact
Several cannonballs are embedded in the tower’s thick walls. They were intentionally left there as visible reminders of past battles — and some can still be seen today.

Author’s Note
Framed by city lights and flags, the tower feels like a quiet witness to Riga’s endurance — a solid fragment of history still standing in the flow of modern life.
