THE SOUL OF RIGA
THE SOUL OF RIGA
National Opera Front
History and Facts
Opened in 1863 as the Riga City (German) Theatre, this neoclassical building was designed by architect Ludwig Bohnstedt. Its Ionic portico and allegorical sculptures on the façade celebrate music, drama, and artistic inspiration. After a major fire in 1882, the opera house was rebuilt, preserving its classical form.

Interesting Fact
For decades the building hosted both opera and drama companies. In 1919 it became the home of the Latvian National Opera, and today it remains Latvia’s leading opera and ballet stage.
